— Winona LaDuke

As @enbridge waltzes away from #Line3 for a repeat performance at #Line5 –  leaving in their wake 3 broken aquifers with hundreds of millions of gallons of lost groundwater, 28+ frac-out spills of possibly millions of gallons of toxic drilling fluid –  who is left facing criminal charges in Northern Minnesota? Sadly, it’s the #WaterProtectors who tried to prevent these tragedies.

On July 19, 2021, Winona LaDuke was arrested with 6 others for peacefully praying to stop Enbridge from repeatedly drilling Line 3 under the Shell River on Anishinaabe treaty lands amid historic drought conditions. The executive director of Honor the Earth, LaDuke has also been appointed guardian ad litem for the Shell River by the 1855 Treaty Commission and by the White Earth Band of Ojibwe.

The river has a right to life, which is now threatened by Enbridge’s aquifer breaches, toxic drilling fluids, and tar sands pipeline. Together with Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources – which received over $2 million in expense reimbursements from Enbridge – the Canadian oil giant circumvented the intent of their water permits and water appropriation suspensions, in direct violation of Anishinaabe treaty rights and ongoing stewardship.

Minnesota law enforcement, reimbursed $7.5 million by Enbridge, made over 1000 arrests of those peacefully representing the water’s rights during construction.

Ask Governor Tim Walz to #DropTheCharges against the #WaterProtectors who tried to #StopLine3.

Let's continue to stand together on Monday and beyond to support the hundreds of Water Protectors facing hearings and trials across Northern Minnesota. These heroes put themselves in harm’s way to defend sacred water and wild rice, treaties and climate, and now unjustly carry the burden of criminal charges, while Enbridge walks free.  and climate, and now unjustly carry the burden of criminal charges, while Enbridge walks free.
